BBC News with Joe Macintosh. The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro has been chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games. It'll be the first South American city to stage the event. Rio beat the Spanish capital Madrid in a final round of voting by the International Olympic Committee. The bookmakers' favourite, the city of Chicago, was eliminated in the first round, and Tokyo in the second. A United Nations agency has responded to a week of natural disasters in Asia by saying the region must invest more in preventative measures. The International Strategy for Disaster Reduction said Asia was highly exposed with regular earthquakes combined and extreme weather conditions, both of which are exacerbated by climate change and population growth.
