The 250 or so wild elephants which still live here are now strictly protected. And each year young are born to the small herds. If elephants were to survive anywhere in China, it could only have been here, in Yunnan. The same mountains which guide the monsoon rains north and which made Joseph Rock's journeys so treacherous, also guarded Yunnan's forests and its wildlife.


约250头野生大象依旧居住在此并受到严密的保护。每年都有小象诞生在稀疏的象群中。倘若问大象打算在中国的何处安居，那必定非云南莫属。山脉引导着季风带着湿热气流径直流向滇北，这不仅使得Joseph Rock的旅程充满了艰难，也保护了云南的森林和这儿的野生动物。
