But, by this time, York and Somerset's rivalry had become a deadly enmity. Margaret believed that Somerset supported her husband and for the moment he had the King by his side. But York was intent on having the King under his control. And now the other great noble families were taking sides. And in May 1455, when the two armies came face to face in the unassuming market town of St Albans, political confrontation finally became civil war. The first battle of the Wars of the Roses was fought through the streets and houses of the town. In these confined spaces, probably 100 men died.
