In its early years, the castle was a military machine, designed to maintain tight control of the land around it. The original appearance of that ancient castle is now almost hidden by later changes, but if you know where to look, you can still find evidence of its war-like origins. Now, this is an office just tucked away in a corner of Windsor Castle. But look under here. As if by magic, just lift these, and the medieval castle emerges. Because if you were a soldier in Windsor under siege, you'd need a way to get out. And this is the secret passage. This is exactly what it looked like in the 1200s. You can see it's wide enough to accommodate a whole army of men, you can imagine them rushing down the stairs, and it leads out on to the street. And this is the clever bit - they'd then be able to sneak up on the enemy and attack them from behind.
