This is the official coronation portrait of George III,
painted around the time he moved into Buckingham House.
And as was the custom, he's in full royal regalia.
Exquisite gold silks and sumptuous ermine robes.
But look closely at his face,
because this is a king
he also wanted to be seen as good-natured and honest and open.
A very different character from the previous owner,
the Duke of Buckingham.
Where he was showy and flamboyant,
George III was serious and conscientious,
even a little bit priggish.
He presented Buckingham House to Queen Charlotte as a quiet family retreat,
away from the hurly-burly of court life.
