[00:10.73]The Norwegians stayed two days at the Pole．

[00:17.28]with a Norwegian flag on it．
[00:20.00]Inside the tent,they left some food,
[00:23.29]a letter for the King of Norway,
[00:25.30]and a letter for Scott．
[00:28.59]They left some more black flags near the Pole,
[00:31.69]and one twenty-eight kilometres north．
[00:35.20]Then they skied away,back to the north．
[00:40.49]It's a beautiful day,Bjaaland wrote．
[00:44.44]The sun is warm,the snow is good．
[00:48.09]But the dogs run too quickly-
[00:50.49]I can't get in front of them!
[00:53.83]They found their depots easily．
[00:56.51]There were ten between the Pole and Framheim．

[01:03.43]They laughed and skied quickly down the mountains．

[01:30.18]Amundsen walked quietly to his bed．
[01:33.94]'Good morning,Lindstrm,'he said．
[01:37.46]'Is our coffee ready?'
[01:42.44]The black flags waited at the Pole．
[01:46.85]'What's that,Captain?'
[01:48.90]Bowers said．'Over there?'
[01:52.17]'Where?'Scott asked．
[01:54.34]'What-oh my God!'
[01:59.14]They all saw me small black flag in the snow,
[02:03.15]two kilometres in front of them．
[02:07.47]Slowly,they pulled their sledge to it．
[02:12.73]Next day,January 17th 1912,
[02:17.10]they found the tent and the Norwegian flag．
[02:22.46]Near it,Scott took the British flag from under his clothes,
[02:26.98]and put it up．
[02:29.41]In his diary,Scott wrote：

[02:37.14]We are all tired,and have cold feet and hands．
[02:42.93]It is－30°Centigrade and there is a snowstorm．

[03:30.70]and then began to cry．
[03:34.13]'What's the matter?'her friend asked．
[03:38.20]'My poor,poor husband,'Mrs Scott said．
[03:43.44]'What's happened to him?Where is he now?'
[03:50.11]Scott's men were always hungry．
[03:53.08]There were not many depots and they were difficult to find．
[03:57.22]We need to find the next depot today,Oates wrote．
[04:02.21]But how can we find one black flag in all this snow?
[04:08.14]It's very difficult．
[04:10.76]And there is food for four men,not five．
[04:16.58]They were all tired and ill,too．

[05:23.13]and said nothing．
[05:27.19]On March 9th they found another depot,
[05:30.94]but there was not much food．
[05:33.59]Slowly,they walked on．
[05:37.08]Oates's feet were worse every day．
[05:42.00]March 17th was Oates's birthday．
[05:46.10]He was thirty-two．
[05:48.99]He lay in the tent and listened to the wind outside.
[05:53.85]He was very cold,very hungry,and very very tired．
[06:02.57]He wrote a letter to his mother and gave it to Wilson．
[06:07.41]Then he got up,and opened the door of the tent．
[06:12.58]He stopped in the door for a minute．
[06:15.63]Scott,Wilson,and Bowers looked at him．
[06:19.94]They didn't speak．
[06:22.94]'I'm going outside for a minute,'
[06:26.64]Oates said．'I may be some time．'
[06:32.47]They didn't see him again．
[06:37.93]At Cape Evans,the Englishmen waited．
[06:42.24]On December 11th,Meares and the dogs came back．
[06:47.31]On January 3rd,Teddy Evans and his two men arrived at Cape Evans．
[06:53.96]The Terra Nova came,and went．
[06:57.66]Winter began．Scott did not come．
[07:04.12]The Englishmen waited all winter at Cape Evans．
[07:08.31]Then,on October 26th 1912,
[07:12.59]they started for the south．
[07:16.33]Two weeks later,they found a tent．
[07:20.39]There were three bodies in the tent-
[07:23.38]Scott,Wilson,and Bowers．
[07:28.22]They put the bodies under the snow．
[07:31.66]Then they took the men's letters and diaries,
[07:34.45]and went north to Cape Evans again．
[07:38.76]In Scott's diary they read：Oates died like a good Englishman．
[07:45.13]We all did．Please,remember us,
[07:49.99]and look after our families．
[07:53.15]We did our best．
[07:57.55]No one found Oates's body．
[08:00.75]But he is there,somewhere,
[08:03.54]under the snow and the wind,in the coldest,
[08:07.70]emptiest place on earth．
