[ti:] [ar:] [al:] [00:17.56]Chapter 4 The death of David Riccio [00:23.93]It was a Saturday evening in March 1566. [00:29.80]I was in Edinburgh with some friends. [00:33.75]David Riccio was there, [00:36.33]with six or seven other people. [00:40.14]We were in a small room, [00:42.33]but there was a good dinner on the table, [00:45.19]and we were happy. [00:47.99]It was dark outside, [00:50.59]but inside it was warm and friendly. [00:55.11]Suddenly, a door opened behind me. [01:00.88]In the door was Henry Darnley,my husband. [01:06.73]I stood up and smiled. [01:10.57]'Good evening, my lord,'I said. [01:14.21]'Please come in. [01:16.13]Would you like something to eat?' [01:19.64]'No, thank you,'he said. [01:23.13]'I'm not hungry. [01:25.61]But I want to sit next to you, wife. [01:29.61]Please tell that man to move.' [01:33.90]A man got out of the chair next to me and Darnley sat beside me. [01:41.79]Then he put his arms round me. [01:45.74]I did not like it. [01:48.23]His face was hot, and his eyes looked unhappy. [01:54.14]But I smiled and said, [01:56.37]'I'm happy to see you, my lord.' [02:00.74]'Are you, Mary?'He laughed.'Are you really?' [02:06.88]'Yes, of course, my lord. But-' [02:11.41]Then the second door opened and his friend, [02:15.86]Lord Ruthven, stood there. [02:18.59]He had a knife in his hand. [02:21.91]His face was red, and he looked very angry. [02:28.37]At first no one moved. [02:31.58]Then Ruthven said,'Your Majesty, [02:36.19]send David Riccio out of this room, [02:39.31]now! I want him!' [02:43.54]I looked at Riccio. He was afraid. [02:48.73]'Why?'I said.'Why do you want him?' [02:54.43]'He is a bad, wicked man!' [02:58.14]Ruthven said.'Send him out!' [03:02.86]'No!'I said.'You want to kill him. [03:07.94]David Riccio is my friend! [03:10.78]He stays here, with me!' [03:14.54]'He goes out, woman!' [03:17.74]Lord Ruthven said.' King Henry, [03:21.07]hold your wife, please!' [03:24.45]I stood up, but Darnley held my arms and I could not move. [03:31.41]David Riccio ran behind me and held my dress. [03:36.41]My friends in the room stood up too, [03:39.41]and moved towards Ruthven angrily. [03:43.71]But he had a knife in his hand. [03:47.77]'Get back!'he said angrily. [03:51.49]'Don't touch me!' [03:53.88]Then five men with knives ran into the little room, [03:57.86]and there was a fight. [03:59.68]One man held a knife in my face, [04:05.22]and another man hit David Riccio, behind me. [04:10.40]Then they pulled him out of the room. [04:13.49]'Help me!'he screamed.'Help me, [04:17.32]my Queen-please! [04:19.21]They're going to kill me!Don't-aaaaaargh!' [04:24.91]I couldn't help him, because Darnley had me in his arms. [04:30.54]But I could hear David Riccio's screams. [04:34.61]I think he fell down the stairs, [04:37.50]and he screamed for two or three minutes. [04:42.03]Then it was quiet. [04:46.04]'What are you doing?' [04:48.27]I asked Darnley angrily.'Riccio is a good man- [04:53.87]why are you doing this?' [04:56.97]Darnley laughed.'You are my wife, [05:01.79]Mary-not David Riccio's!'he said. [05:07.26]'so why are you with him every evening? [05:10.82]You never talk to me!' [05:14.45]'I don't talk to you because you are never here!' [05:17.59]I said.'You are always drinking with your friends! [05:23.08]You aren't a king, you're a stupid boy!' [05:28.74]He laughed again. [05:31.03]It was not a nice laugh. [05:34.98]'Well,'he said.'Perhaps I am a boy, [05:40.84]but that is better than David Riccio, now. [05:45.57]Do you want to go and see him?' [05:49.84]I did see him, five minutes after that. [05:55.17]He was very dead, and there was blood all over the floor. [06:02.44]Poor David Riccio. [06:07.63]He sings to God now, not me. [06:14.22]I looked at Henry Darnley, my husband. [06:18.64]He had a stupid smile on his face. [06:23.11]But I think he was afraid of me. [06:27.45]I looked at him a long time, [06:30.45]and the smile went away. [06:34.38]'Remember this night, husband,' [06:38.34]I said to him.'Remember it well. [06:43.89]Think about it when you look into my eyes, [06:48.41]and before you go to sleep. [06:52.58]David Riccio was my friend, [06:56.86]and you killed him in front of me. [07:01.29]I'm never going to forget that,Henry Darnley. [07:06.32]Never!'
