[ti:] [ar:] [al:] [offset:0] [00:36.70]Down the rabbit-hole [00:41.44]Alice was beginning to get very bored. [00:45.01]She and her sister were sitting under the trees. [00:50.49]Her sister was reading, [00:52.83]but Alice had nothing to do. [00:56.94]Once or twice she looked into her sister's book, [01:01.88]but it had no pictures or conversations in it. [01:07.01]'And what is the use of a book, [01:10.15]'thought Alice, [01:11.39]'without pictures or conversations?' [01:16.10]She tried to think of something to do, [01:19.42]but it was a hot day and she felt very sleepy and stupid. [01:25.80]She was still sitting and thinking [01:29.15]when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran past her. [01:36.67]There was nothing really strange about seeing a rabbit. [01:41.24]And Alice was not very surprised when the Rabbit said, [01:46.67]'Oh dear!Oh dear!I shall be late!' [01:52.92](Perhaps it was a little strange, Alice thought later, [01:58.06]but at the time she was not surprised.) [02:03.26]But then the Rabbit took a watch out of its pocket, [02:09.08]looked at it,and hurried on. [02:12.69]At once Alice jumped to her feet. [02:17.66]'I've never before seen a rabbit with either a pocket, [02:22.18]or a watch to take out of it,'she thought. [02:27.00]And she ran quickly across the field after the Rabbit. [02:32.18]She did not stop to think, [02:34.67] and when the Rabbit ran down a large rabbit-hole, [02:38.58]Alice followed it immediately. [02:43.62]After a little way the rabbit-hole suddenly went down, deep into the ground. [02:50.96]Alice could not stop herself falling, and down she went, too. [02:59.36]It was a very strange hole Alice was falling very slowly, [03:07.17]and she had time to think and to look around her. [03:12.02]She could see nothing below her because it was so dark. [03:17.92]But when she looked at the sides of the hole, [03:20.94]she could see cupboards and books and pictures on the walls. [03:26.27]She had time to take things out of a cupboard, look at them, [03:31.52]and then put them back in a cupboard lower down. [03:36.17]'Well!'thought Alice. [03:38.35]'After a fall like this,I can fall anywhere! [03:42.86]I can fall downstairs at home, [03:45.47]and I won't cry or say a word about it!' [03:50.12]Down,down,down. [03:54.25]'How far have I fallen now?'Alice said aloud to herself. [03:59.55]'Perhaps I'm near the centre of the earth. [04:04.54]Let me think…That's four thousand miles down.' [04:11.47] (Alice was very good at her school lessons [04:15.01]and could remember a lot of things like this.) [04:18.98]Down,down,down. [04:23.34]Would she ever stop falling? [04:26.25]Alice was very nearly asleep when, [04:30.14]suddenly,she was sitting on the ground. [04:35.63]Quickly,she jumped to her feet and looked around. [04:40.94]She could see the White Rabbit, [04:42.77]who was hurrying away and still talking to himself. [04:48.01]'Oh my ears and whiskers!'he was saying.'How late it's getting!' [04:56.80]Alice ran after him like the wind. [05:00.67]She was getting very near him when he suddenly turned a corner. [05:06.77]Alice ran round the corner too,and then stopped. [05:12.16]She was now in a long, dark room with doors all round the walls, [05:19.71]and she could not see the White Rabbit anywhere. [05:24.60]She tried to open the doors, but they were all locked. [05:30.52]'How will I ever get out again?'she thought sadly. [05:35.92]Then she saw a little glass table with three legs, [05:41.85]and on the top of it was a very small gold key. [05:47.55]Alice quickly took the key and tried it in all the doors, but oh dear! [05:56.95]Either the locks were too big,or the key was too small, [06:02.21]but she could not open any of the doors. [06:07.91]Then she saw another door,a door that was only forty centimetres high. [06:16.01]The little gold key unlocked this door easily, [06:20.67]but of course Alice could not get through it—she was much too big. [06:26.95]So she lay on the floor and looked through the open door, [06:32.31]into a beautiful garden with green trees and bright flowers. [06:40.47]Poor Alice was very unhappy. [06:44.13]'What a wonderful garden!' she said to herself. [06:49.81]'I'd like to be out there—not in this dark room. [06:54.88]Why can't I get smaller?' [06:59.18]It was already a very strange day, [07:02.30]and Alice was beginning to think that anything was possible. [07:09.72]After a while she locked the door again, [07:13.04]got up and went back to the glass table. [07:17.73]She put the key down and then she saw a little bottle on the table [07:24.74]('I'm sure it wasn't here before,'said Alice). [07:29.86]Round the neck of the bottle was a piece of paper [07:33.80]with the words DRINK ME in large letters. [07:40.67]But Alice was a careful girl. [07:45.10]'It can be dangerous to drink out of strange bottles,'she said. [07:50.60]'What will it do to me?'She drank a little bit very slowly. [07:58.34]The taste was very nice, like chocolate and oranges and hot sweet coffee, [08:06.46]and very soon Alice finished the bottle. [08:11.87]'What a strange feeling!'said Alice.' [08:16.60]I think I'm getting smaller and smaller every second.' [08:23.15]And she was. [08:25.19]A few minutes later she was only twenty-five centimetres high. [08:32.71]'And now,'she said happily, [08:35.52]'I can get through the little door into that beautiful garden.' [08:41.41]She ran at once to the door. [08:44.43]When she got there, she remembered that [08:47.63]the little gold key was back on the glass table. [08:52.67]She ran back to the table for it, [08:55.57]but of course, she was now much too small! [09:01.63]There was the key, high above her,on top of the table. [09:07.54]She tried very hard to climb up the table leg,but she could not do it. [09:14.02]At last, tired and unhappy,Alice sat down on the floor and cried. [09:21.44]But after a while she spoke to herself angrily. [09:26.71]'Come now,'she said. [09:29.16]'Stop crying at once. What's the use of crying?' [09:34.86]She was a strange child, and often talked to herself like this. [09:41.07]Soon she saw a little glass box near her on the floor. [09:46.96]She opened it,and found a very small cake with the words EAT ME on it. [09:55.81]Nothing could surprise Alice now. [09:59.45]'Well,I'll eat it,'she said.'If I get taller,I can take the key off the table. [10:08.12]And if I get smaller,I can get under the door. [10:13.10]One way or another,I'll get into the garden. [10:17.43]So it doesn't matter what happens!' [10:21.29]She ate a bit of the cake, [10:23.85]and then put her hand on top of her head. [10:28.07]'Which way?Which way?'she asked herself,a little afraid. [10:36.40]Nothing happened. [10:39.11]This was not really surprising. [10:41.73]People don't usually get taller or shorter when they eat cake. [10:47.09]But a lot of strange things were happening to Alice today. [10:52.24]'It will be very boring,'she said,'if nothing happens.' [10:58.04]So she went on eating, and very soon the cake was finished.
