[00:00.55] |
Well, it all began June 5th, 1969 |
[00:06.20] |
That was the day that I was born |
[00:08.19] |
Now, I was born into a very, very musical family |
[00:10.98] |
So much so, that I thought that since everybody around me could sing and play |
[00:15.34] |
That everybody in the whole world could sing and play |
[00:19.99] |
And it wasn't 'til I got into kindergarten that I realized that I was very wrong |
[00:23.81] |
Right around the time we were doing "My country 'tis of thee, sweet..." |
[00:28.11] |
I realized that was not the case |
[00:34.30] |
Now, uh, as you'll see, my mother is an ongoing theme in the show tonight |
[00:40.65] |
One of the questions people ask me the most is: How long have you been playing the piano? |
[00:44.96] |
And really, I don't know |
[00:45.64] |
We always had a piano in the house |
[00:46.87] |
I am what you would consider to be self-taught |
[00:49.39] |
Now, what does that mean, "self-taught"? |
[00:51.54] |
That means I taught myself to play the piano |
[00:55.36] |
Now, how'd you do that, Brian? I will tell you how I did that |
[00:58.38] |
You see, my mother is a classically trained pianist |
[01:01.77] |
And when I told her I was interested in learrning to play the piano |
[01:05.39] |
She's like, "Oh great, see, now I can teach you the way that I was taught" |
[01:08.73] |
So I put my hands on the keys the first time and I did it the wrong way |
[01:11.83] |
She pulls out a ruler and, bop, smacks me on the back of my hand |
[01:15.38] |
So I said to myself, "Okay, I"ma play football" |
[01:19.38] |
That's the end of that whole thing |
[01:21.12] |
So what I did was, I took the long route and taught myself to play |
[01:24.68] |
Now, one of the very first songs, actually the very first song I taught myself to play was this one |
[01:29.67] |
And see if you remember this... |
