Stephen was still a prisoner, but troops loyal to his cause began to ravage the land south of the Thames just across the river from the City of London. Undeterred Matilda pressed on with her coronation plans. She was so close to her moment of triumph but at the last moment everything began to unravel. As Matilda prepared to enjoy her feast at Westminster, bells began to toll. The gates of the City swung open and out swarmed thousands of armed Londoners to drive her away from the capital. All Matilda's hopes of being crowned Queen were trampled into the dirt along with the feast she had left behind. |
