Gabriela Mistral was once an ordinary teacher in a |
[00:04.85] |
small village school in Northern Chile. Towering |
[00:08.18] |
mountains separate her village from the world outside. |
[00:11.56] |
Gabriela Mistral was only 15 when she began teaching, |
[00:16.44] |
but she was a good teacher. She helped the minds of |
[00:19.97] |
her students' scale the mountain walls and reached |
[00:23.10] |
out to the world beyond. For 18 years, Gabriela |
[00:26.07] |
devoted her life to the poor farm children of |
[00:30.69] |
Chile's Northern valleys. During part of this time |
[00:33.97] |
, she was director of schools in all of Chile. |
[00:36.94] |
Before long, many countries recognized her as a great |
[00:41.52] |
friend of children and the leader in education. |
[00:44.13] |
In 1922, she was invited to Mexico to help organize the |
[00:49.78] |
rural school system. Two years later, Gabriela Mistral |
[00:54.00] |
came to the United States where she served as a |
[00:57.98] |
visiting professor in several colleges. |
