[00:35.61] Chapter 1
[00:38.62] It was cold and dark out in the road
[00:41.75] and the rain did not stop for a minute.
[00:45.46] But in the little living-room of number 12 Castle Road it was nice and warm.
[00:52.17] Old Mr White and his son, Herbert,
[00:54.82] played chess and Mrs White sat and watched them.
[00:59.78] The old woman was happy because her husband
[01:02.29] and her son were good friends and they liked to be together.
[01:07.16] 'Herbert's a good son,' she thought.
[01:10.60] 'We waited a long time for him
[01:13.35] and I was nearly forty when he was born,
[01:17.05] but we are a happy family.'
[01:19.64] And old Mrs White smiled.
[01:22.99] It was true.Herbert was young and he laughed a lot,
[01:28.89] but his mother and his father laughed with him.
[01:33.31] They had not got much money,
[01:35.40] but they were a very happy little family.
[01:39.37] The two men did not talk because they played carefully.
[01:44.21] The room was quiet, but the noise of the rain was worse now
[01:49.08] and they could hear it on the windows.
[01:51.68] Suddenly Old Mr White looked up.
[01:56.05] 'Listen to the rain!' he said.
[01:59.85] 'Yes, it's a bad night,'
[02:02.75] Herbert answered.'It's not a good night to be out.
[02:07.50] But is your friend, Tom Morris, coming tonight?'
[02:11.05] 'Yes, that's right.
[02:13.76] He's coming at about seven o'clock,
[02:16.18] the old man said.'But perhaps this rain…'
[02:21.34] Mr White did not finish because
[02:23.83] just then the young man heard a noise.
[02:27.33] 'Listen!'Herbert said.
[02:29.82] 'There's someone at the door now.'
[02:32.89] 'I didn't hear a noise,'
[02:35.62] his father answered,
[02:38.11] but he got up from his chair and went to open the front door.
[02:43.28] Mrs White got up too and began to put things away.
[02:48.25] Mr White said,'Come in, come in, Tom.
[02:53.53] It's wonderful to see you again.
[02:56.72] What a bad night!
[02:58.78] Give me your coat and then come into the living-room.
[03:03.04] It's nice and warm in there.'
[03:07.20] The front door was open,
[03:09.54] and in the living-room Mrs White and Herbert felt the cold.
[03:14.56] Then Mr White came back into the living-room
[03:17.51] with a big,red-faced man.
[03:21.31] 'This is Tom Morris,'
[03:23.69] Mr White told his wife and son.
[03:27.02] 'We were friends when we were young.
[03:30.02] We worked together
[03:31.09] before Tom went to India.
[03:33.83] Tom, this is my wife and this is our son, Herbert.'
[03:41.29] 'Pleased to meet you,' Tom Morris said.
[03:45.66] 'Pleased to meet you, Mr Morris,'
[03:48.67] Mrs White answered.
[03:50.57] 'Please come and sit down.'
[03:53.27] 'Yes, come on, Tom,'
[03:56.15] Mr White said.'Over here.
[03:58.99] It's nice and warm.'
[04:02.07] 'Thank you,'the big man answered and he sat down.
[04:07.58] 'Let's have some whisky,'
[04:09.57] Old Mr White said.
[04:11.82] 'You need something to warm you on a cold night.'
[04:16.09] He got out a bottle of whisky and the two old friends began to drink and talk.
[04:23.25] The little family listened with interest
[04:25.52] to this visitor from far away and he told them many strange stories.
