[00:04.53] Chapter 3
[00:07.63] It was nearly midnight.
[00:10.30] In their warm living-room,
[00:12.26] the two old people and their son sat
[00:14.39] and talked about the soldier's stories.
[00:17.96] 'India is a wonderful country,' Mr White said.
[00:22.65] 'What exciting stories!
[00:25.05] It was a good evening.'
[00:28.08] Mrs White stood up to take some things into the kitchen,
[00:31.91] but she stopped and listened to Herbert and his father.
[00:35.76] 'Yes,'Herbert said.
[00:38.51] ' Morris told some interesting stories,
[00:41.71] but, of course, some of them weren't true. '
[00:45.27] 'Oh Herbert!'Mrs White said.
[00:49.29] 'Well, Mother, that story about the monkey's paw wasn't true.
[00:54.42] A dirty little monkey's paw isn't magic!
[00:58.02] But it was a good story.' And Herbert smiled.
[01:02.79] 'Well,I think you're right, Herbert,' his mother said.
[01:09.14] 'I don't know,' Mr White said quietly.
[01:14.06] 'Perhaps the story was true.
[01:17.50] Strange things can happen sometimes.'
[01:21.67] Mrs White looked at her husband.
[01:24.96] 'Did you give some money to Tom Morris for that paw?'
[01:29.47] she asked.'We don't have money to give away for nothing!'
[01:34.87] Mrs White was angry now.
[01:37.83] 'Well,yes,'her husband answered.
[01:41.80] 'I did, but not much,
[01:45.28] and at first he didn't want to take it.
[01:47.89] He wanted the monkey's paw.'
[01:51.03] 'Well,he can't have it,'Herbert laughed.
[01:54.80] 'It's our paw now and we're going to be rich and happy.
[02:00.59] Come on, Father.Make a wish!'
[02:05.10] Old Mr White took the paw from his pocket.
[02:09.27] 'OK,Herbert, but what am I going to ask for?
[02:14.79] I have everything-you,
[02:17.24] your mother. What do I need?'
[02:21.00] 'Money,of course,'Herbert answered quickly.
[02:25.21] 'We need money!
[02:27.33] You're always thinking about money.
[02:30.19] That's because we haven't got very much of it.
[02:33.55] With money you can pay for this house .
[02:37.41] It can be your house!
[02:39.95] Go on, Father, wish for thirty thousand pounds!'
[02:45.80] Herbert stopped talking and his old father thought for a minute.
[02:51.28] The room was quiet and they could hear the rain on the windows.
[02:56.79] Then Mr White took the monkey's paw in his right hand.
[03:01.45] He was afraid, but he looked at his wife and she smiled at him.
[03:06.92] 'Go on,' she said.
[03:10.47] Slowly and carefully Mr White said,
[03:14.42] 'I wish for thirty thousand pounds.'
[03:21.04] Suddenly he gave a cry and Mrs White and Herbert ran to him.
[03:27.50] 'What's the matter, Father?' Herbert asked.
[03:31.04] 'It moved!' Mr White cried.
[03:34.66] 'The monkey's paw-it moved!'
[03:39.44] They looked at the paw.
[03:41.68] It was now on the floor and not in the old man's hand.
[03:46.46] The family watched it,
[03:48.25] and they waited-but it did not move again.
[03:53.14] So the little family sat down again and they waited.
[03:57.15] Nothing happened
[03:59.36] The noise of the rain on the windows was worse now
[04:03.14] and their little living-room did not feel nice and warm.
[04:07.86] Mrs White said,'It's cold Let's go to bed.'
[04:13.94] Mr White did not answer and in the end Herbert said,
[04:18.68] 'Well,there's no money,Father.
[04:22.33] Your friend's story wasn't true.'
[04:25.83] But Mr White did not answer.
[04:28.95] He sat quietly and said nothing.
[04:32.39] After some time Mrs White said to her husband,
[04:36.82] 'Are you OK ?'
[04:39.01] 'Yes,yes,' the old man answered,
[04:44.85] 'but for a minute or two I was afraid.'
[04:48.22] 'Well, we needed that money,'
[04:51.62] Mrs White said,'but we aren't going to get it.
[04:55.99] I'm tired. I'm going to bed.'
[05:00.80] After Mrs White went to bed,
[05:03.34] the two men sat and smoked for some time.
[05:07.51] Then Herbert said,'Well,Father,
[05:11.42] I'm going to bed too.
[05:13.69] Perhaps the money is in a bag under your bed!
[05:17.34] Good night, Father.'And Herbert laughed and went out of the room.
[05:24.27] Old Mr White sat in the cold living-room for a long time.
[05:29.24] The candle died and it was dark
[05:35.14] Suddenly, the old man saw a face at the window.
[05:39.85] Quickly, he looked again,
[05:42.81] but there was nothing there.
[05:45.26] He felt afraid.
[05:47.25] Slowly he stood up and left the cold, dark room.
