[00:05.55] | Chapter 3 The Ponies |
[00:11.23] | On October 27th, |
[00:13.77] | the Terra Nova arrived in Wellington,New Zealand. |
[00:19.35] | When Scott came off the ship, |
[00:22.06] | a newspaper man walked up to him. |
[00:26.02] | 'Captain Scott!Captain Scott! |
[00:29.23] | Can I talk to you,please!'he said. |
[00:33.70] | Scott stopped and smiled. |
[00:36.14] | 'Yes,of course,'he said. |
[00:40.00] | 'What do you want to know?' |
[00:43.07] | 'Are you going to win?'the man asked. |
[00:46.77] | 'Win?'Scott asked.'Win what?' |
[00:52.84] | 'Win the race to the South Pole, |
[00:55.37] | of course,'the newspaper man said. |
[00:59.33] | 'It's a race between you and Amundsen,now. |
[01:04.12] | Look at this!'He gave a newspaper to Scott |
[01:09.77] | Scott looked at it. |
[01:12.59] | It said:Fram races Scott to South pole. |
[01:18.93] | "We are going to win." Says Amundsen. |
[01:24.06] | Scott's face went white. |
[01:27.45] | 'Give me that!'he said. |
[01:31.41] | He took the newspaper and read it carefully. |
[01:36.21] | The newspaper man watched him,and waited. |
[01:40.91] | 'Well,Captain Scott,'he said at last. |
[01:45.61] | 'Who's going to win this race? |
[01:48.48] | Tell me that!' |
[01:51.34] | Scott looked at him angrily. |
[01:54.02] | 'This is stupid!'he said. |
[01:57.66] | 'It's not a race! |
[02:00.26] | I came here to learn about the Antarctic- |
[02:05.02] | I'm not interested in Amundsen,or in races! |
[02:11.03] | 'Then he walked back on-to his ship, |
[02:14.27] | with the newspaper in his hand. |
[02:18.13] | Later that day,he talked to his men. |
[02:24.38] | He gave them the newspaper,and laughed. |
[02:29.31] | 'It doesn't matter,'he said. |
[02:32.68] | 'We're in front of Amundsen, |
[02:35.44] | and we have more men, |
[02:37.71] | and more money. |
[02:40.30] | He has only eight men,and a lot of dogs. |
[02:45.07] | I know about dogs- |
[02:48.28] | they don't work in the Antarctic. |
[02:51.92] | We have sixteen men and the new motor sledges- |
[02:57.12] | they are much better. |
[02:59.50] | And tomorrow the ponies are coming. |
[03:02.75] | We need ponies,motor sledges, |
[03:06.04] | and good strong British men-that's all. |
[03:11.26] | Forget about Amundsen! |
[03:13.79] | He's not important!' |
[03:17.40] | Scott asked Oates to look after the ponies, |
[03:22.15] | but he did not let Oates buy them. |
[03:26.36] | When Oates first saw the ponies, |
[03:29.16] | in New Zealand,he was very unhappy. |
[03:33.92] | Most of the ponies were old, |
[03:36.95] | and some of them were ill. |
[03:40.61] | 'They're beautiful ponies,Titus,'Scott said. |
[03:45.62] | 'They come from China-they're wonderful ponies!' |
[03:51.65] | Oates looked at them angrily, and said nothing. |
[03:58.14] | Then he asked:'Where is their food,Captain?' |
[04:04.03] | 'Here!'Scott opened a door. |
[04:07.95] | Oates looked inside. |
[04:10.96] | He thought for a minute. |
[04:13.69] | 'We need more food than this,Captain Scott! |
[04:18.69] | These ponies are going to work in the coldest place on earth- |
[04:24.99] | they need a lot of food-more than this!' |
[04:30.98] | Scott smiled quietly. |
[04:34.80] | 'We can't take more food on this ship,Titus. |
[04:39.67] | Where can we put it? |
[04:41.33] | But it doesn't matter,old boy. |
[04:45.13] | They're very strong ponies,you know. |
[04:48.67] | The best ponies on earth.' |
[04:54.78] | Later that night,Oates wrote a letter to his mother. |
[05:00.10] | There are nineteen ponies on the Terra Nova now,he wrote. |
[05:07.29] | All the penies are in a small room at the front of the ship. |
[05:13.32] | We eat our food in the room under the ponies, |
[05:18.68] | so our table is often wet and dirty. |
[05:23.96] | Scott makes a lot of mistakes,I think, |
[05:28.96] | and Antarctica is a very dangerous place. |
