[00:00.58] | Chapter 3 Huck and Jim travel south |
[00:06.08] | For some days everything went along quietly, but we were getting bored. |
[00:15.54] | We wanted to know what was happening in town and so I decided to go and find out. |
[00:22.90] | Jim said,'Why don't you wear the old dress and the hat that we found in the house? |
[00:31.46] | People won't know you, then. They'll think you're a girl.' And so I did. |
[00:39.64] | Just after it was dark,I got into the canoe |
[00:45.62] | And went up the river to the bottom of the town. |
[00:49.41] | There,I left the canoe and went on foot. |
[00:55.52] | Before long, I came to a little house which was always empty. |
[01:00.92] | Now there was a light on,and when I looked through the window, |
[01:07.69] | I saw a woman of about forty. |
[01:11.17] | She was a stranger and that was good because she didn't know me. |
[01:17.76] | So I knocked on the door.'I must remember that I'm a girl'I said to myself. |
[01:26.73] | The woman opened the door.'Come in,' she said. |
[01:34.03] | She looked at me with her little bright eyes.'What's your name?'she asked. |
[01:42.15] | 'Sarah Williams,'I replied.'I'm going to see my uncle,on the other side of town. |
[01:51.81] | My mother's ill, you see,and she needs help.' |
[01:57.15] | 'Well, you can't go there by yourself now. It's too dark. |
[02:05.18] | My husband will be home in about an hour. Wait for him and he'll walk with you.' |
[02:13.67] | And then she began to tell me about all her troubles. |
[02:20.46] | I was getting bored with all this until she said something about Pop and my murder. |
[02:28.97] | 'Who did it?'I asked. |
[02:32.90] | 'Well,'she replied,'some people say old Finn did it himself; |
[02:40.31] | Other people think it was a slave who ran away that night. |
[02:45.70] | His name was Jim. |
[02:48.85] | They'll give three hundred dollars to anybody who finds him—— |
[02:54.29] | And they'll give two hundred dollars for old Finn. |
[02:59.39] | He got drunk and left town with two strangers. |
[03:03.80] | A lot of people think he killed his boy and he's going to come back one day, |
[03:10.93] | And get all Huck Finn's money.' |
[03:15.40] | 'And what about the slave?'I asked. |
[03:21.06] | 'Oh,they'll soon catch him. People want the three hundred dollars. |
[03:27.98] | I think he's on Jackson's Island, you know.I've seen smoke there. |
[03:35.29] | My husband's gone to get two of his friends |
[03:38.80] | And they're going over there with a gun later tonight.' |
[03:44.34] | When I heard this, my hands began to shake. |
[03:48.92] | The woman looked at me strangely, but then she smiled and said kindly, |
[03:56.36] | 'What did you say your name was?' |
[04:00.22] | 'M-Mary Williams.' |
[04:04.96] | 'Oh,' she said,'I thought it was Sarah.' |
[04:09.29] | 'Er… well, yes, it is. Sarah Mary Williams. |
[04:16.64] | Some people call me Sarah and some people call me Mary, you see.' |
[04:23.11] | 'Oh,do they?'She smiled again.'Come on,now—what's your real name? |
[04:35.42] | Bill? Bob? I know you're not really a girl.' |
[04:41.64] | So then I had to tell her another story, with a different name, |
[04:49.68] | And I said I was running away. She said she wouldn't tell anybody, |
[04:55.69] | And gave me some food before I left.I hurried back to the island and Jim. |
[05:02.96] | 'Quick,Jim!'I cried,waking him up.'They're coming to get us!' |
[05:12.17] | We got out the raft as fast as we could, put all our things on it, |
[05:20.41] | Tied the canoe on behind, and moved off down the river. |
[05:26.38] | When it began to get light,we hid. When it was dark again,we travelled on. |
[05:35.26] | On the fifth night we passed St Louis, |
[05:40.04] | And we decided to go on down to Cairo in Illinois, sell the raft there |
[05:47.20] | And get a boat to Ohio. There are no slaves in Ohio. |
[05:53.06] | We slept for most of that day and we began our journey again when it was dark. |
[06:01.30] | After some time,we saw lights on the Illinois side of the river |
[06:07.88] | And Jim got very excited. He thought it was Cairo. |
[06:13.90] | Jim got the canoe ready and I went off in it to take a look at those lights. |
[06:20.74] | But it wasn't Cairo. |
[06:24.00] | After that, we went on down the river. |
[06:29.37] | It was very dark that night and it wasn't easy to see where we were going. |
[06:35.77] | Suddenly,a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. |
[06:47.49] | Jim and I jumped off the raft into the water. |
[06:52.28] | The boat hit the raft and went on up the river. |
[06:57.72] | When I came up out of the water, I couldn't see Jim anywhere. |
[07:04.78] | I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. |
[07:13.24] | 'He's dead!' I thought.Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. |
[07:25.31] | I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. |
[07:32.01] | Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. |
[07:36.69] | They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house,'Who's there?' |
[07:44.74] | 'George Jackson,'I answered quickly.'I've fallen off a river boat.' |
[07:52.70] | Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, |
[07:59.44] | And they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. |
[08:05.08] | I told them that my family were all dead, |
[08:08.88] | So they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. |
[08:13.37] | It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed. |
[08:20.91] | A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, |
[08:29.10] | 'Come with me!'Together,we went down to some trees by the river. |
[08:36.83] | 'In there!'he said and went away. |
[08:42.17] | On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. |
[08:55.90] | When the steamboat hit the raft,Jim told me, the raft didn't break up. |
[09:01.58] | Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me. |
[09:08.37] | We decided to leave at once. It's all right living in a house for a little while, |
[09:18.09] | But you feel more free and easy and comfortable on a raft. |
